Reversing Hyperpigmentation and Redness with IPL or Photofacial. Is it effective for all skin conditions and all skin types?

IPL (intense pulsed light) or Photofacial is an extremely effective light based “laser” treatment that rejuvenates the skin to target and reverse skin conditions like rosacea redness, discoloration and hyperpigmentation. These problems normally develop from aging and sun exposure and can be difficult to treat with topical solutions. Photofacial is one of the best non-invasive procedures to safely and dramatically improve the tone or color of the skin, especially for redness and hyperpigmentation. The treatment delivers pulses of light that deeply permeate the surface of the skin.  A wide scope of light is used to promote the production of new collagen and improve the texture, as well as the color. Photofacial is not appropriate for all skin types or on all discolorations however. For example patients with melasma due to pregnancy or birth control are not good candidates since their discoloration is induced by hormone fluctuations. The treatment can deliver temporary results but the discoloration will usually return until the patient’s hormones are brought back into balance.  Patients with darker skin are also not good candidates. The device is designed to target pigmentation in the skin and since naturally dark skin or tanned skin has more melanin or pigmentation it could blister, burn, or even be permanently damaged by Photofacial. For patients who are eligible for Photofacial however, treatments can be made even more effective when accompanied with a follow up procedure of Clearlight with Levulan also known as Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) or HydraFacial. HydraFacial is a gentle skin exfoliation technique that gets to the epidermal layers and removes dead skin to reveal healthy rejuvenated tissue.
